V. J. James is a critically acclaimed Malayali novelist and short story writer. An engineer by profession, he worked at Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre. Along with six short story collections, his major works include Purappadinte Pusthakam (1999), Chorashasthram (2002), Dathapaharam (2005), Leyka (2006), Ottakkaalan Kakka (2013), Nireeshwaran (2014) and Anti-Clock (2018). He has also bagged many honours including Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award, Vayalar Award, Basheer Puraskaram and O.V Vijayan Award. The English translation of Chorashasthram was shortlisted for the Atta Galatta Bangalore Literature Festival Book Prize. The Malayalam film Munthirivallikal Thalirkkumbol is an adaptation of his short story Pranayopanishath. Anti-clock, his novel which portrays the life of a grief stricken man through the lens of his occupation was shortlisted for the 2021 JCB Prize for Literature.
