A J Vijayan is a social activist and trade union leader. He started working with fishing communities in 1975 and was one of the founding members of the National Fishworkers Forum. He was also the General Secretary of the Kerala Independent Fishworkers Federation (KSMTF) for 2 years. Vijayan, who keenly follows developments in the coastal and fishing industries in the country, was involved with the Vizhinjam Port Project from the beginning and is a petitioner in the National Green Tribunal against environmental clearance for the port project.
