Professor Kesavan Veluthat was the Chairman of the Department of History at the University of Mangalore. He took voluntary retirement in 2008 and was invited as Professor of Ancient Indian History at the University of Delhi.
Among his publications are The Buffalo Century, Notes of Dissent, The Early Medieval in South India, The Political Structure of Early Medieval South India and Brhaman Settlements in Kerala, besides a few books he has edited and a number of research papers in reputed journals and collections. He has also published widely in Malayalam. Clio and Her Descendants edited by Manu V. Devadevan (Primus Books, Delhi, 2018), is a festschrift to him.
He has been a sectional president and joint secretary of the Indian History Congress. The Asiatic Society of Mumbai recently decorated him with the prestigious Campbell Memorial Gold Medal.
He is currently the Director, Institute for Studies in the Coastal Heritage of Kerala, located in Kodungallur.
